3 minute timer

Three minutes turns up everywhere in the kitchen and the gym: black tea, instant noodles, a round in the ring. It is short enough to forget about until it is too late.

FreeFullscreen, no ads

The short answer

Three minutes is the short end of steeping black tea, the time printed on most instant noodle packets, and the length of a professional boxing round. Press Start when the water goes on, and the alarm sounds at zero. In the kitchen, pick "Loud bell, until stopped" so the alarm keeps going until you come back.

How to use it

Three steps to a timer on the wall

  1. Step 1: Choose a time

Pick a preset or set your own. The timer remembers what you used last on this device.

  2. Step 2: Press start

Start the timer, then press F or the fullscreen button to fill the screen.

  3. Step 3: Run the room

Space pauses, the up arrow adds a minute, R resets. Fullscreen shows the timer alone, with no ads and no navigation.

Running it well

Four things worth knowing

  • Start it when the water touches the leaves

Steeping time counts from when hot water meets the tea, not from when the kettle clicks off. Three minutes gives a lighter black tea; four or five makes it stronger and more bitter.

  • Follow the packet for noodles

Most instant noodles say three minutes, but thicker ones can say four or five. The packet knows its own noodles better than any rule of thumb.

  • For boxing rounds, use intervals

Professional boxing rounds are three minutes with a minute of rest. The interval timer runs the rounds and the rest back to back with a bell at each change, so you do not restart it by hand.

  • Make it loud in the kitchen

A soft chime is easy to miss over a kettle or an extractor fan. "Loud bell, until stopped" keeps ringing until you tap the screen or press a key.

In the room

Built to be read from the back row

A timer that only works on the person running it is not doing the job. The digits scale to the screen, the colour changes before the end, and fullscreen shows nothing else at all.

How long should I steep black tea?

Three to five minutes in water just off the boil. Three gives a lighter cup; five is stronger and more bitter.

How long is a boxing round?

Three minutes in professional boxing, with one minute of rest between rounds. Amateur and training rounds are often shorter.

Can I add time while it runs?

Yes. Press the up arrow or the + 1 min button to add a minute, and the down arrow to take one off.
