The short answer

To play piano online, tap "Tap to play", then use your computer keyboard: the Z row plays one octave of white keys and the Q row the next, with the black keys on the rows above them. On a phone, tap or slide across the keys. Plug in a MIDI keyboard and press Connect MIDI to play with touch sensitivity.

How to play

Four steps, no install

  1. Step 1: Tap to start

Browsers need one tap before a page can make sound. After that, every key plays instantly.

  2. Step 2: Play with anything

Computer keys, a touchscreen, a mouse or a MIDI keyboard. Use the arrows to move up or down an octave, and hold Space for the sustain pedal.

  3. Step 3: Learn a song

Pick a song below. The next key glows and waits until you play it, and a wrong note just flashes — no buzzers.

  4. Step 4: Record and keep it

Press Record, play, and download an MP3 to share or a MIDI file to open in music software.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

Which computer keys play which notes?

Two rows, as in most music software. Z X C V B N M play the white keys of one octave, with S D G H J for the black keys between them. Q W E R T Y U I O P play the next octave up, with the number keys 2 3 5 6 7 9 0 as its black keys. The left and right arrow keys shift everything by an octave, and each key on screen shows its letter.

Can I play piano on my phone?

Yes. Tap keys with one or more fingers, or slide along the keyboard to play a run. Turn the phone sideways for bigger keys. On an iPhone, turn off the silent switch or you will hear nothing.

Can it show notes in sargam?

Yes. Switch the labels to Sargam or Both, and choose which key is Sa. With Sa on C, C is Sa, D is Re, E is Ga, F is Ma, G is Pa, A is Dha and B is Ni. Songs switch to sargam too.

Why can't I hear anything?

Browsers keep a page silent until you tap or press a key once, so tap "Tap to play" first. On an iPhone or iPad, also check the silent switch on the side: it mutes sound from web pages. If it still is silent, check the volume and that the right speaker or headphones are selected.

How do I connect a MIDI keyboard?

Plug the keyboard in with USB (or a USB–MIDI cable), then press Connect MIDI and allow access when the browser asks. It works in Chrome, Edge, Opera and Firefox on a computer or Android. Safari does not support Web MIDI, so on a Mac use Chrome or Firefox. How hard you play is passed through, and the sustain pedal works too.

Can I record what I play?

Yes. Press Record, play, then press Stop and download it as an MP3 or a MIDI file. The recording keeps the notes you played and builds the audio from them, so it is clean and nothing is ever recorded through your microphone.

Are the songs free to use?

Every song here is public domain or traditional: nursery rhymes, classical pieces, sargam exercises and raag scales. We don't publish pop, film or game songs, because their sheets belong to someone else. Each song lists where it comes from.
