The short answer

To play harmonium online, tap "Tap to play", choose your Sa (C is the default; many singers pick a Sa between C and A), and play with the computer keyboard: with Sa on C, Z X C V B N M are one saptak of shuddha swars and Q W E R T Y U the next. Switch on Drone to hold Sa and Pa underneath while you practise.

How to play

Four steps, no install

  1. Step 1: Choose your Sa

Pick the key that suits your voice. Every label moves with it, so Sa is always Sa.

  2. Step 2: Turn on the drone

Drone holds Sa and Pa in the lower saptak, as the drone stops do on a real harmonium.

  3. Step 3: Practise an alankar

Pick an exercise below. The next swar lights up and waits for you to play it.

  4. Step 4: Record your riyaz

Press Record while you practise and download it as an MP3 to listen back.

Sa is the note you choose as home; every other swar is counted from it. With Sa on C, the white keys are the shuddha swars and the black keys are the komal swars and tivra Ma.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

Which Sa should I choose?

Pick the key where you can sing Sa comfortably and still reach the upper Sa. Many men sing with Sa around C or C#, and many women around G to A, but your own voice decides. The labels, the songs and the drone all move with your Sa.

What does the drone do?

It holds Sa and Pa in the lower saptak underneath what you play, the way harmonium players fix drone reeds or a tanpura plays behind a singer. It helps you hear whether your swars are in tune.

How are komal and tivra swars shown?

Komal swars are written in lowercase — re, ga, dha, ni — and tivra Ma as Ma'. A dot under the first letter marks the lower (mandra) saptak and a dot above it the upper (taar) saptak, as in Bhatkhande notation.

Is it the same as a real harmonium?

It is a synthesised reed sound with two slightly different reeds and a gentle bellows swell. It is good for practising swars and patterns, but it is not a substitute for the feel of a real bellows under your hand.

Why can't I hear anything?

Browsers keep a page silent until you tap or press a key once, so tap "Tap to play" first. On an iPhone or iPad, also check the silent switch on the side: it mutes sound from web pages. If it still is silent, check the volume and that the right speaker or headphones are selected.

How do I connect a MIDI keyboard?

Plug the keyboard in with USB (or a USB–MIDI cable), then press Connect MIDI and allow access when the browser asks. It works in Chrome, Edge, Opera and Firefox on a computer or Android. Safari does not support Web MIDI, so on a Mac use Chrome or Firefox. How hard you play is passed through, and the sustain pedal works too.

Can I record what I play?

Yes. Press Record, play, then press Stop and download it as an MP3 or a MIDI file. The recording keeps the notes you played and builds the audio from them, so it is clean and nothing is ever recorded through your microphone.

Are the songs free to use?

Every song here is public domain or traditional: nursery rhymes, classical pieces, sargam exercises and raag scales. We don't publish pop, film or game songs, because their sheets belong to someone else. Each song lists where it comes from.
