The short answer
Sa is the tonic, the note you choose as home. If Sa is C, then Re is D, Ga is E, Ma is F, Pa is G, Dha is A and Ni is B — the white keys from C. The black keys are the komal swars re (C#), ga (D#), dha (G#) and ni (A#), and tivra Ma' (F#).
Four steps, no install
Step 1: Find Sa
With Sa on C, the white keys from C upward are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni.
Step 2: Find the komal swars
The black keys between are re, ga, dha and ni — and the one between Ma and Pa is tivra Ma'.
Step 3: Move Sa
Change Sa to any key. The pattern of steps stays the same; only the starting key moves.
Step 4: Play it
Pick the aaroh and avroh below and play along as each swar lights up.
Sa Re Ga Ma to piano keys
Sa is the note you choose as home; every other swar is counted from it. With Sa on C, the white keys are the shuddha swars and the black keys are the komal swars and tivra Ma.
| Swar | Name | Key when Sa = C | Semitones above Sa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sa | Shadja (Sa) | C | 0 |
| re | Komal Rishabh (re) | C# (black key) | 1 |
| Re | Shuddha Rishabh (Re) | D | 2 |
| ga | Komal Gandhar (ga) | D# (black key) | 3 |
| Ga | Shuddha Gandhar (Ga) | E | 4 |
| Ma | Shuddha Madhyam (Ma) | F | 5 |
| Ma' | Tivra Madhyam (Ma') | F# (black key) | 6 |
| Pa | Pancham (Pa) | G | 7 |
| dha | Komal Dhaivat (dha) | G# (black key) | 8 |
| Dha | Shuddha Dhaivat (Dha) | A | 9 |
| ni | Komal Nishad (ni) | A# (black key) | 10 |
| Ni | Shuddha Nishad (Ni) | B | 11 |
Which key plays which note
Two rows, as in most music software. The arrow keys move everything up or down an octave, and each key on screen shows its letter.

Questions people ask
Anything we've missed?
Which piano key is Sa?
Any key can be Sa — it is the note you choose as home, not a fixed pitch. On a piano it is usually taught with Sa on C, so C D E F G A B are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni. Singers often move Sa to suit their voice.
What are komal and tivra swars on the piano?
Komal (flat) swars are a semitone below the shuddha ones: with Sa on C, komal re is C#, komal ga is D#, komal dha is G# and komal ni is A#. Tivra (sharp) Ma is a semitone above Ma: F#. Sa and Pa never change.
How do I read the dots in sargam notation?
A dot below a swar means the lower (mandra) saptak and a dot above means the upper (taar) saptak. No dot means the middle (madhya) saptak. So Ṇi is the Ni just below Sa, and Ṡa is the Sa an octave above.
Why can't I hear anything?
Browsers keep a page silent until you tap or press a key once, so tap "Tap to play" first. On an iPhone or iPad, also check the silent switch on the side: it mutes sound from web pages. If it still is silent, check the volume and that the right speaker or headphones are selected.
How do I connect a MIDI keyboard?
Plug the keyboard in with USB (or a USB–MIDI cable), then press Connect MIDI and allow access when the browser asks. It works in Chrome, Edge, Opera and Firefox on a computer or Android. Safari does not support Web MIDI, so on a Mac use Chrome or Firefox. How hard you play is passed through, and the sustain pedal works too.
