2 minute timer

Two minutes is the length dentists recommend for brushing, and it feels longer than most people expect. A countdown you can see settles the argument.

FreeFullscreen, no ads

The short answer

Two minutes, twice a day, is how long the American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth. That is about thirty seconds for each quarter of the mouth. Press Start as the brush goes in, and the frame turns amber for the last 24 seconds, which is the cue to move to the last quarter.

How to use it

Three steps to a timer on the wall

  1. Step 1: Choose a time

Pick a preset or set your own. The timer remembers what you used last on this device.

  2. Step 2: Press start

Start the timer, then press F or the fullscreen button to fill the screen.

  3. Step 3: Run the room

Space pauses, the up arrow adds a minute, R resets. Fullscreen shows the timer alone, with no ads and no navigation.

Running it well

Four things worth knowing

  • Thirty seconds a quarter

Split the mouth into four: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right. Two minutes gives each one thirty seconds, which stops the front teeth getting all the attention.

  • Let children watch the frame

The frame around the digits empties as time passes, so a child who cannot read a clock can still see how long is left.

  • The two-minute rule for tasks

From David Allen's Getting Things Done: if a task takes less than two minutes, do it now rather than writing it down. A two-minute countdown keeps the rule honest.

  • Use a soft sound in a quiet house

The default chime is gentle. Switch to the loud bell only if the timer is in another room from the sink.

In the room

Built to be read from the back row

A timer that only works on the person running it is not doing the job. The digits scale to the screen, the colour changes before the end, and fullscreen shows nothing else at all.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

How long should I brush my teeth?

Two minutes, twice a day, is the American Dental Association's recommendation. Thirty seconds for each quarter of the mouth covers it.

What is the two-minute rule?

A productivity rule from David Allen's book Getting Things Done: if something takes less than two minutes, do it straight away instead of adding it to a list.

Can a child use it on a tablet?

Yes. Open it in any browser and press the fullscreen button. The digits and the emptying frame fill the screen.

Does it work without internet?

Once the page has loaded, yes. It runs in the browser and needs no connection.
