Mechanical keyboard test: chatter, repeats and stuck keys

Switch chatter is a worn contact bouncing and sending two presses where you made one. It is intermittent, which makes it maddening to prove — the per-key counter below is what proves it.

Best keyboard for a laptop with dead keys

When laptop keys die or type twice, an external keyboard is the quickest fix and costs less than most keyboard repairs. The wired Dell KB216 is the cheapest dependable choice, the Portronics Bubble 3.0 adds wireless and a number pad, and the Logitech Pebble Keys 2 K380s is the slim one to carry with the laptop.

The short answer

To test a mechanical keyboard for chatter, press each key once deliberately and watch its counter. A counter advancing by two from a single press is a bouncing switch. That is a hardware failure, fixed by replacing the switch or raising the debounce time in firmware, not by cleaning.

Getting it right

Four things worth knowing

  • One deliberate press at a time

Chatter only shows against a known number of presses. Press once, pause, read the counter. A fast run of presses proves nothing at all.

  • Raise the debounce time before desoldering

QMK, VIA and most vendor software expose a debounce value. Increasing it masks a marginal switch for a few milliseconds of latency, and often buys a keyboard another year.

  • Hot-swap sockets make this a two-minute repair

If the board is hot-swap, pull the failing switch and move a known-good one over from a key you never use, like Scroll Lock, to confirm the diagnosis before ordering parts.

  • Test after cleaning, not before

Contact cleaner and compressed air genuinely fix chatter caused by contamination. Run the counter test, clean, then run it again so you know whether it worked.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

What causes double-typing on a mechanical keyboard?

The metal contact inside the switch bounces as it closes. A worn switch bounces for longer than the firmware's debounce window allows, so the firmware reads two separate presses.

Can chatter be fixed in software?

Partly. Raising the debounce time in QMK, VIA or vendor software hides a marginal switch. It does not repair the switch, and a badly worn one eventually exceeds any sensible debounce value.

How do I test one switch in isolation?

Press only that key, repeatedly and deliberately, and compare its counter with the number of presses you made. Doing the same for a known-good key alongside it makes any difference obvious.

Is a stuck key the same as chatter?

No. A stuck key stays registered with your hands off the board. Chatter produces extra presses only when you do press the key.
