The short answer

Baby shower bingo is played while the gifts are opened: each guest has a card of likely presents — diapers, onesie, bottle, stroller — and marks each one as it is unwrapped. The first to complete a line calls bingo. Print one card per guest; 40 words on a 5×5 card keeps every card different.

How it works

From list to a game in four steps

  1. Step 1: Check the gift list

Forty likely presents are already filled in. Add the ones you know are coming, and remove anything that would give the game away.

  2. Step 2: Set one card per guest

Count guests plus two or three spare. Two cards to a page is a comfortable size to mark on a lap.

  3. Step 3: Print with the call sheet

The last page lists every word, so whoever is writing down gifts can tick them off as they go.

  4. Step 4: Mark gifts as they open

Guests mark each gift as it is unwrapped. The first full line wins; play on to a blackout for a second prize.

How to win

Winning patterns, from quickest to longest

Standard US bingo uses 75 balls on a 5×5 card with a free centre; UK bingo and Tambola use 90. Pick the pattern before the first call.

Calls until the first winner

Measured, not guessed: these are the median results of 200 games per row, dealt by the same engine that makes your cards, with every card checked after each call.

A longer word list makes a longer game: with only 24 words every card holds the same words, and the first line falls after about 8 calls. At one call every ten seconds, a 75-ball blackout takes around 11 minutes.

Four things worth knowing

  • Hand out pens with the cards

Dabbers are for bingo halls. At a shower, a pen per guest is enough, and the cards make a nice keepsake for the parent-to-be.

  • Play while the gifts are opened

It is the one part of a shower where guests sit and watch for twenty minutes. Bingo gives them something to do during it, which is why the game exists.

  • Add the gifts you know about

If the registry says a stroller is coming, make sure it is on the list. A word that never comes up means that square never gets marked.

  • Have a prize for blackout too

The first line usually falls within the first ten gifts. A second prize for the whole card keeps everyone playing to the end.

No accounts, no player data

Cards and the PDF are made by your own browser. Phone play works without a server at all: the game travels in the link after the # mark, which browsers never send anywhere, and each phone deals its own card from the game number. The caller checks a win by dealing the same card again from its number. There is no list of players, because there is nowhere for one to be kept.

  • No sign-up for the host or the players
  • No names collected, ever
  • Your word list never leaves the device
  • No ads on the caller or on players' cards
  • No ads printed on the PDF
FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

How do you play baby shower bingo?

Each guest gets a card of gift words. As the parent-to-be opens presents, guests mark any gift on their card. The first guest to mark a full line across, down or diagonally shouts bingo and wins a small prize.

What words go on baby shower bingo cards?

Likely gifts: diapers, onesie, bottle, pacifier, rattle, blanket, stroller, car seat, bib, baby monitor, teddy bear, wipes and so on. The list above has 40 to start from, and you can add anything from the registry.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every theme, any number of cards up to 500 at a time, the caller screen and phone play are free, with no account. The pages carry ads; the printed cards, the caller screen and the players' phone cards never do.

Are the cards actually different from each other?

Yes. Each card in a game is checked against every card before it, and a repeat is thrown away and redrawn, so no two card numbers in one game carry the same squares in the same places. With a small word list the cards will still share many words — they simply sit in different places.

How do I check a winner?

Every card is printed with a card number and a game number. On the caller screen, type the card number into Check a card: it rebuilds that card from the game number, marks what has been called, and names any line, corners or blackout it has completed. You never need to collect the card.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. The cards and the PDF are made in your browser. Phone play works by putting the game in the link itself, after the # mark, which browsers do not send to any server. There are no accounts and no player names.

Can guests play on their phones instead?

Yes. Choose Play on phones and send the link to the group chat. Each phone gets its own card and marks it by tapping, which works well for a virtual shower too.
