EMOM timer: every minute on the minute

EMOM is the one interval format where the rest is whatever is left. Finish the work in forty seconds and you rest for twenty — which makes the work choice, not the timer, the thing that sets the difficulty.

      The short answer

In an EMOM you start a set piece of work at the top of every minute and rest for whatever remains. Pick work that takes 30 to 45 seconds: under 30 the session is too easy to be worth the structure, and over 45 you arrive at the next minute with no recovery and the whole thing collapses within a few rounds.

      How to use it

Three steps to a timer on the wall

      1. Step 1: Choose a time

Pick a preset or set your own. The timer remembers what you used last on this device.

      2. Step 2: Press start

Start the timer, then press F or the fullscreen button to fill the screen.

      3. Step 3: Run the room

Space pauses, the up arrow adds a minute, R resets. Fullscreen shows the timer alone, with no ads and no navigation.

      Running it well

      Four things worth knowing

      • Choose work that takes 30 to 45 seconds

That leaves 15 to 30 seconds of rest, which is the range where an EMOM is hard but holds together. Work that takes 50 seconds falls apart by round five.

      • Alternate movements on long sessions

Twenty minutes of the same thing every minute is a grind. Alternating two or three movements by minute lets each one recover while the others work.

      • Scale by reps, not by stopping

If you start missing the minute, drop the reps rather than skipping a round. Missing rounds breaks the structure, which is the only thing an EMOM has.

      • Let the colour change be the start signal

You do not need to watch the number. The screen changing at the top of the minute is the cue, which means you can keep your eyes on what you are doing.

      In the room

Built to be read from the back row

A timer that only works on the person running it is not doing the job. The digits scale to the screen, the colour changes before the end, and fullscreen shows nothing else at all.

      FAQ

      Questions people ask

      Anything we've missed?

      What does EMOM mean?

Every Minute On the Minute. You begin a set piece of work at the top of each minute and rest for whatever time is left before the next one starts.

How much work should an EMOM round have?

Enough to take 30 to 45 seconds. That leaves meaningful rest while keeping the pressure on. Work that fills the whole minute leaves no recovery and the session collapses.

      What is an E2MOM?

The same idea on a two-minute clock, used for heavier or longer pieces that cannot be done in under a minute. The preset above runs it.

What if I cannot finish the work in time?

Reduce the reps and keep the structure. Skipping a round removes the only thing making an EMOM different from a set of intervals.
