Mouse double-click test: is your switch failing?

Single-click at a normal pace inside the box. A mouse with a worn switch sends two clicks for one press, and the red counter shows it happening.

The short answer

To test for a double-click fault, single-click slowly inside the box for about a minute. If the double-click counter or the red counter rises while you only ever click once at a time, the switch is bouncing. It is a hardware fault: replace the switch, or claim the mouse under warranty.

Getting it right

Four things worth knowing

  • Only single-click during the test

The whole test depends on knowing you never double-clicked on purpose. Click once, pause, click once again. Anything extra is the mouse.

  • Check Windows' double-click speed too

A very slow double-click setting makes two separate clicks count as a double-click. If the red counter stays at zero but files keep opening, check Mouse settings before blaming the hardware.

  • Copy the evidence for a warranty claim

Switch faults are a common warranty claim. Take a screenshot of the counters with the date visible and attach it to the claim.

  • Swapping the switch is a real option

Most mice use standard switches. If the mouse is out of warranty, a replacement switch costs little — though it needs soldering on most models.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Anything we've missed?

Is a double-clicking mouse fixable?

Sometimes briefly with compressed air or by re-tensioning the switch's metal leaf. The lasting fix is a new switch, or a new mouse. Software debounce tools can mask it, at the cost of slower clicks.

Why does the fault come and go?

The worn contact only bounces past the debounce window some of the time. That is why a one-minute test catches it and a ten-second test often does not.

Could it be my operating system?

If the red counter rises here, no — two physical clicks reached the browser. If only the double-click counter rises while you click slowly, check the double-click speed setting in your operating system first.

Does this work for a trackpad?

Yes, though trackpads rarely have this fault. A trackpad that double-clicks on its own is more often a tap-to-click sensitivity setting.
