The dasha is the tradition's clock: which graha's period is running now, its sub-period, when it ends, and what the next one tends to bring. With Saturn's Sade Sati and the year's transits, it is how any 'how will next year go' is read.

Tell the chat above your birth date, time and place, and your question is read from the houses, grahas and dasha the tradition uses for it — free, computed in your browser, and never sent anywhere.

How Jyotish reads it

Which houses, which grahas

  1. Vimshottari dasha divides life into nine planetary periods in a fixed order — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years — starting from the lord of the birth nakshatra. Each mahadasha holds nine antardashas in the same order.

  2. A period is read from its lord: which houses it rules, where it sits, how strong it is, and what it promised in the natal chart. The same Rahu dasha reads very differently in two charts.

  3. The year ahead is the running dasha and antardasha read with the year's transits — above all Saturn's (Sade Sati is Saturn transiting the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, about seven and a half years) and Jupiter's.

  4. Muhurta — the right moment for a beginning — is a separate branch: the panchang's tithi, nakshatra and vara, the day's windows, and the Moon's placement for the person.

The answers

What the chart can say

Every question here is one of a few kinds. The tradition has a way of reading each kind; this is it, in the words the app uses.

What does my chart say?

Your mahadasha is fixed by the Moon's exact position at birth, so it needs the birth time. The kundli tool lists every mahadasha with dates, marks the one running now and opens its antardashas.

When will it happen?

A dasha's end date is arithmetic from the Moon's degree at birth; the kundli tool prints it. What the next period tends to bring is read from its lord's place and strength in your chart.

How will it go?

How a period will go is described from its lord: the houses it rules and sits in, its strength, its aspects. The reading describes the tendency of the period in the texts' own terms; it does not forecast events.

Will it happen?

Whether a dasha is good or bad is not a property of the graha — Saturn's dasha in one chart is the best of a life — but of its lord's place in yours. The tradition reads the chart, not the name.

For yourself

Want to ask back, the way you would an astrologer?

The Jyotish app answers in your words — Hindi, Hinglish or English — from the chart on your phone, asks a question back when it needs to, and shows the placement and the rule under every sentence. Health, money and legal questions are declined, not guessed.

What to do

The upay the tradition gives

A remedy is aimed at a graha, and only at a weak or afflicted one — a strong graha needs none. These are the grahas most often behind this topic, with the free practices the Jyotish app lists; the kundli tool checks whether yours are weak before it suggests any.
