Baseline app privacy

This covers the Baseline mobile app. The website has its own policy.

The short version

Baseline is built to work without an account. Your photos stay on your phone unless you deliberately turn on backup. We do not sell your data, we do not share your photos with anyone, and we do not use your photos to train anything.

Your photos

The photos you take in Baseline are stored on your phone, in the app's own storage. Other apps cannot read them. They are not uploaded anywhere by default.

If you turn on backup, a copy is written to your own Google Drive, into a hidden folder that only this app can see. It uses your Drive storage, not ours, and we cannot read it. Turning backup off stops new copies being made; deleting the app's data from your Drive removes what is already there.

Photos are analysed on your phone to check framing and lighting — finding your face in the frame, and reading text from product labels when you scan one. That analysis happens on the device. The images are not sent to a server for it.

Your account, if you make one

You can use Baseline without signing in. If you do sign in, you either continue with your Google account or we email you a sign-in link — there is no password. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase Authentication, which stores your email address to identify your account.

Signing in also syncs your routine and the steps you tick off, diary entries (including any note you write), product shelf, change log, your own skin ratings (the 1–5 scores you give at your baseline and checkpoints) and settings, so they come back if you change phones. That sync is stored in Google Cloud Firestore against your account identifier. Photos are not part of this sync — they are covered by Drive backup above, and only if you turned it on.

Scanning a barcode

When you scan a product's barcode, only the barcode number is sent to look the product up: first to Open Beauty Facts, then Open Food Facts, then UPCitemdb if neither knows it. Nothing else goes with it. If a product is missing and you choose to add it to Open Beauty Facts, the barcode, name, brand and ingredients you entered are sent there, and only when you confirm. Ingredient pages come from a dictionary inside the app and need no connection.

Advertising and purchases

The free version shows banner ads supplied by Google AdMob, on the shelf and insights screens. Where the law requires it, Google's consent form is shown first, and no ads load if you refuse. Baseline requests non-personalised ads only and never passes photos, product names, skin ratings or anything else from your record to the ad service. AdMob may still use a device identifier to limit how often an ad is shown and to prevent fraud; you can reset or limit it in your phone's settings. Pro, or the one-time Remove ads purchase, turns ads off. Pro and Remove ads are handled by RevenueCat on top of Google Play billing. We never see your card details — Google handles payment.

Links to shops

"Where to buy" opens a search on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases; where that applies the link carries our tag, at no extra cost to you. Once you leave the app, Amazon's own privacy policy applies.

What Baseline is not

Baseline is not a medical device. It describes photos; it does not diagnose, treat, or give medical advice. Nothing in the app should be used in place of a clinician.

Deleting your data

In the app, You → Photo vault → Delete everything removes your photos and records from the phone, and can delete the Drive backup at the same time. Deleting the app also removes everything stored on the device.

If you signed in, the same screen can also delete your synced account: the records held against it in Firestore are removed, then the account itself. If you are offline, this happens on the next connection. You can also email us at the address below from the address you signed in with, and we will remove it.

Children

Baseline is not intended for children. The app asks your age before it stores anything and stops if you are under the minimum age.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, we will update the date at the top of this page.
