Jyotish is an astrology app. Your chart is calculated on your phone. You need an account to use it. The account keeps your birth details and the people you save so they come back on a new phone. When you ask a question, the app sends your question, the facts it calculated from the chart and recent conversation to a language model, which writes the answer. This page says exactly what goes where.
Not advice
Jyotish offers guidance and reflection. It does not give medical, legal or investment advice. It refuses health, legal and investment questions, and does not read elections, markets or sport. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number.
What Jyotish stores, and where
| Data | Where it lives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email address and password, or your Google sign-in | Firebase Authentication (Google). We never see your password | To sign you in. An account is required |
| Your name, an optional contact email, gender, language, tradition, country and notification choices | Your account document in Google Cloud Firestore, which only your signed-in account can read or write | So a new phone picks up where this one left off |
| Your birth date, time and place (with its coordinates and time zone), and those of up to eight people you save | On your phone, and in your account in Cloud Firestore | To calculate charts, and to restore them on a new phone |
| Your chart and every placement in it | Calculated on your phone | To read from |
| Your conversations with Ask: each question and answer, with the name and birth details of the person it was about | Cloud Firestore, against your account | A record of what was asked and answered. The app does not read it back today |
| Palm readings, japa counts and vrat reminders | On your phone and in your account | Your own record, restored on a new phone |
| Your credit balance and purchases | Our server and RevenueCat, against your account identifier | So credits you bought or earned are not lost |
| Settings such as text size and current location | On your phone | To make the app work |
When a question leaves your phone
Jyotish sends text to a server we run on Cloudflare, which passes it to Google’s Gemini API. This happens when you:
- Ask a question. The app sends your question, the language to answer in, up to 40 earlier turns of the conversation, and the reading the engines computed. About you, it sends your age, gender and chart: placements, aspects, dasha periods and whether you are Manglik. If you ask about someone you saved, it also sends their name, relation, gender and birth date, time and place. The model writes the answer.
- Ask something the app cannot place. Your question and the recent conversation are sent so the right part of the app can answer.
- Get an answer in your language. Answers the app writes itself, including its refusals of health and other questions, are sent with your question so the model can word them in your language.
- Read your palm. The photo you take and your chart are sent so the model can describe the lines. Only a photo you choose is sent.
Your email address and account identifier are not sent to the model.
While the app runs on Google’s free tier of the Gemini API, Google may use what is sent to improve its products, and people at Google may read it. Do not type anything into Ask that you would not want read.
Our server keeps your IP address for two minutes to stop any one phone overusing it. The wording of a question and the kind of question the app decided it was are cached for an hour, and also kept in Cloud Firestore without an identifier, so the same question is handled the same way next time.
If you speak a question instead of typing it, your phone’s speech recogniser turns it into text. On Android this may send the audio to Google.
Questions we record to improve the app
Each question you ask is also saved, up to 300 characters, to a separate collection with no account, device or other identifier attached: the words, whether the app understood it, the kind of question, the app’s language and the time. It shows us which questions the app cannot answer yet. Questions about health or distress are not saved to this collection. Because nothing links an entry to you, we cannot find your questions in it later.
Usage analytics
Jyotish uses Firebase Analytics to count how the app is used: which button was tapped, which screen was open, which feature saved or deleted a record, and the kind of any sync error, such as “network unreachable”. It does not record your birth details, your chart, your readings or anything you type. Firebase also receives standard technical information such as an app instance identifier, device model, operating system version and approximate region.
Advertising
Jyotish shows optional rewarded video ads from Google AdMob. You choose to watch one, for example to ask more questions on a busy day, to see a later timing window, to earn a credit, or to open an answer in Ask, where every second answer waits behind a “Watch a short ad to see it” button and opens anyway if no video can load. There are no banner or full-screen ads.
To show an ad, Google’s SDK receives your device’s advertising identifier, your IP address, device type and approximate region. It does not receive your birth details, your chart, your readings or anything you type. When you earn a credit, Google confirms the reward to our server. You can reset or delete your advertising identifier in your phone’s settings (on Android: Settings → Google → Ads). See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
Credits and purchases
Some readings use credits, called Prasad in the app: questions beyond the free ten a day, compatibility reports and palm readings. You get a few credits when you join, can earn them by watching an ad, and can buy packs through Google Play, which handles payment. We never see your card details. RevenueCat records the purchase against your account identifier so our server can add the credits. Credits do not expire.
Notifications
Notifications are off by default. When you turn on the daily reading or a vrat reminder, it is scheduled on your phone.
Who else processes data
| Provider | What for | When |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Analytics) | Sign-in, your account, saved charts, conversations, the anonymous question log, usage counts | When you use the app |
| Cloudflare Workers | Passing questions and palm photos to the language model, credits | When you ask, read a palm or use credits |
| Google Gemini API | Writing answers, working out what a question meant, describing palm photos | Same |
| Google AdMob | Rewarded video ads | When you choose to watch one |
| RevenueCat | Recording credit purchases | When you buy credits |
| Google Play | Distribution and payment | Always |
We do not sell personal data, and nothing you tell the app is used to choose an ad.
Legal basis (EEA and UK)
We process your account details, birth details and questions to provide the service you signed up for, and usage counts and the anonymous question log on the basis of our legitimate interest in making the app work better. If you are in India, we handle personal data in line with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Your choices and rights
- Copy what is on your phone: Me → Privacy & data → Export everything.
- Delete what is on your phone: Me → Privacy & data → Delete everything. This clears the app’s data from the phone. It does not delete your account or what is stored in it.
- Delete your account and everything in it: write to us from the email address on the account. We will delete the account, your saved charts, conversations and the rest of your account data within 30 days. The app has no button for this yet.
- Turn off AI wording: not possible today. Answers need a connection.
- Depending on where you live, you also have rights of access, correction, portability, restriction and objection, and the right to complain to your data-protection authority.
How long we keep it
Data on your phone stays until you delete it or remove the app. Your account and everything stored against it stays until you ask us to delete it. Anonymous question entries and cached question labels are kept for as long as they help us improve the app. Our server does not store the readings and charts it passes to the model; Google’s own retention applies to what reaches the Gemini API.
Age
Jyotish is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If anything here changes, we will update this page and revise the date at the top. A material change, one that affects what data is collected or how it is used, will be noted in the app before it takes effect.
Contact
This is a solo-developed app. There is no legal entity name to attach to it at this stage; the contact address above is where any privacy question, data request or complaint should go.
