> The best New Year's Eve games for a mixed-age family are ones everyone plays at once with nothing to learn: Tambola (Housie) with numbers 1 to 90, a themed bingo with words instead of numbers for children, and short rounds of charades or a quiz. Plan two 25-minute games between dinner and the countdown, with prizes for six people rather than one.

New Year's Eve has a gap in it. Dinner is done, the fireworks are two hours away, and the six-year-old and the seventy-year-old both want something to do. The games that fill it are the ones everyone plays at once, with nothing to learn and nobody knocked out in the first minute.

## The rule for a mixed-age room

Pick games where every player is busy the whole time. Elimination games leave the youngest sitting out after round one. Team games leave the quiet cousin unpicked. Tambola, bingo and a quiz keep every hand busy until the last number.

## Tambola for the grown-ups and older children

Tambola (Housie) is the family game that grandparents already know. Everyone gets a 3×9 ticket with fifteen numbers, the caller draws numbers from 1 to 90, and the first to complete a pattern claims the prize. A round takes 20 to 30 minutes and works for eight players or forty.

Print two tickets per adult and one per child with the [Tambola Tickets tool](/tools/play/tambola-tickets/), twelve to a page. Agree six prizes before the first call: early five, top line, middle line, bottom line, four corners and full house. When someone shouts, type their ticket number into the caller and it shows which prizes that ticket has completed, so the check takes seconds and the game keeps moving.

New Year calls make the draw part of the fun: "Midnight, twelve o'clock" for 12, "Legs eleven" for 11, "Top of the shop, ninety" for the last number. Whoever calls gets to do the voices.

## Word bingo for the children

Younger children lose interest in numbers to 90 but love a card of pictures and words. A New Year word bingo, with squares like "fireworks", "countdown", "midnight" and "party hat", gives them the same game at their level. The caller reads a word, they find it, and a line wins.

The [Bingo Card Generator](/tools/play/bingo-card-generator/) makes cards from any list of words, in 3×3 for the smallest players and 5×5 for the older ones, and checks that no two cards are the same so nobody can copy. Print them or send a link so each phone shows a card, and call from the laptop.

Run the children's bingo first, while the adults finish eating. It takes 10 to 15 minutes and the winners are ready to be prize-givers in the Tambola round.

## Quick fillers between the big games

- **Year-in-review quiz.** Twenty questions about the year just gone, from the family's own events to the news. Play in pairs so the children have an adult.
- **Charades of the year.** Films, songs and family moments from the past twelve months.
- **Resolution auction.** Everyone writes a resolution; the caller reads them out and the room guesses whose it is.
- **The countdown draw.** Every adult writes a number from 1 to 90 on a slip. The last number drawn in the final Tambola round wins the slip.

## Prizes for six people, not one

On a family night, six small prizes beat one big one. Chocolate, a late bedtime, choosing the first film of the new year, an envelope with a note in it. In Tambola the six prizes come built in. In bingo, run three short rounds so three different children win.

If you are playing Tambola for a pot, the split that keeps everyone happy is 10% for early five, 12% for each line, 14% for four corners and 40% for full house.

## Timing the evening

| Time before midnight | Game | Minutes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2 hours | Word bingo, children | 15 |
| 1 h 40 | Tambola, round one | 25 |
| 1 h 10 | Quiz or charades | 20 |
| 45 minutes | Tambola, round two | 25 |
| 15 minutes | Resolutions and the countdown | 15 |

Two Tambola rounds need two sets of tickets. Print a second batch with a new game number, or use a kit that carries two ready games, so the second round is a fresh draw for everyone.

## Questions

### What games can a whole family play on New Year's Eve?

Games that everyone plays at the same time with nothing to learn: Tambola or Housie, a New Year word bingo for the children, charades, a year-in-review quiz, and a countdown of resolutions. Avoid anything that knocks players out early.

### How long should each New Year's Eve game be?

About 25 minutes. A round of Tambola is 20 to 30 minutes, a bingo round is 10 to 15, and a quiz of twenty questions is 20. Two or three games fills the hour before midnight without anyone drifting to their phone.

### What is the difference between Tambola and bingo?

Tambola, or Housie, uses 3×9 tickets with fifteen numbers from 1 to 90 and prizes for lines and full house. Bingo uses 5×5 cards, usually with words or numbers to 75, and a line in any direction wins. Tambola suits adults; word bingo suits children.

### How many prizes should I have?

Six small prizes beat one big one on a family night. In Tambola that is early five, three lines, four corners and full house. Chocolates, a late bedtime, choosing the first film of the year, or a small envelope all work.
