> An Indian ring size is the ring's inner circumference in millimetres minus 40. Size 12 is a 52 mm circumference — 16.5 mm across — and equals US 6, UK L½ and EU 52. Size 14 is 17.2 mm, about US 6¾; size 18 is 18.5 mm, about US 8½. Because jewellers' charts differ by up to a size, give the inner diameter in mm whenever you order from another country.

Ring sizes look like five unrelated systems. They are five ways of naming one measurement: **the distance round the inside of the ring.** Once you see that, converting between them stops being guesswork.

## What each system measures

| System | What the number means |
| --- | --- |
| **India** | Inner circumference in mm, minus 40. Whole sizes. |
| **EU (ISO 8653)** | Inner circumference in mm. |
| **US and Canada** | Diameter = 11.63 mm + 0.8128 mm × size. Quarter and half sizes. |
| **UK and Australia** | Letters A to Z, about 1.25 mm of circumference each, with half sizes. |
| **Japan** | Size 1 is 13 mm across; each size adds a third of a millimetre. |

India and the EU are the easy pair: **EU size minus 40 is the Indian size.** EU 52 is Indian 12; EU 60 is Indian 20.

## The common sizes

| India | Diameter | Circumference | US | UK | EU |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 8 | 15.28 mm | 48 mm | 4½ | I | 48 |
| 10 | 15.92 mm | 50 mm | 5¼ | K | 50 |
| 12 | 16.55 mm | 52 mm | 6 | L½ | 52 |
| 14 | 17.19 mm | 54 mm | 6¾ | N | 54 |
| 16 | 17.83 mm | 56 mm | 7½ | O½ | 56 |
| 18 | 18.46 mm | 58 mm | 8½ | Q½ | 58 |
| 20 | 19.10 mm | 60 mm | 9¼ | S | 60 |
| 22 | 19.74 mm | 62 mm | 10 | T½ | 62 |

The [full chart, sizes 4 to 30](/tools/measure/ring-size/india/#chart), is worked out by the same code as the on-screen sizer, so the two always agree.

Most women's rings sold in India fall between 10 and 14, and most men's between 16 and 22. That tells you what shops stock — not what size a particular finger is.

## Why charts disagree

Put two jewellers' charts side by side and they will differ somewhere, often by a whole size. Nobody is wrong; the scales simply **do not line up**:

- One US size is 0.81 mm of diameter. One Indian size is 0.32 mm. So about two and a half Indian sizes fit inside one US size, and every conversion has to round.
- Some charts round to the nearest US half size, some to the nearest quarter, some always round up.
- A few Indian charts are older house scales that drift from the circumference-minus-40 rule at the ends.

The fix is simple: **order by millimetres.** "Indian 14, 17.2 mm inner diameter" cannot be misread by any seller in any country.

## Finding your size in the first place

1. **From a ring that fits.** [Calibrate your screen with a bank card](/tools/measure/ring-size/), lay the ring on the circle and match the circle to the *inside* edge. It reads all five systems at once.
2. **From the finger.** Print the paper sizer from the same page, check its 100 mm bar with a ruler, and wrap the strip round the finger. Pull it snug over the knuckle — a ring has to get past that.
3. **With paper and a ruler.** Wrap a thin strip of paper round the finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in mm and subtract 40. It works, but a 1 mm slip is a whole size, so do it three times.

## Between two sizes

Go up. A slightly loose ring can be worn and cheaply tightened; a tight one cannot be worn at all. For a **wide band — 6 mm or more — go up one Indian size** regardless, because a wide band grips more of the finger.

Fingers are smallest on cold mornings and largest on warm evenings. Size for the evening.

Bangles work the same way — one inside measurement, named in inches and sixteenths rather than millimetres. The [bangle size chart](/articles/bangle-size-chart-india/) lists every size, and the [bangle sizer](/tools/measure/bangle-size/) reads one on the same calibrated screen.

## Questions

### What is Indian ring size 12 in US size?

About US 6. Indian 12 is a 52 mm inner circumference and a 16.5 mm inner diameter, which is also UK L½ and EU 52.

### How is an Indian ring size calculated?

It is the inner circumference in millimetres minus 40. A ring with a 54 mm inner circumference is Indian size 14. Each size up adds 1 mm of circumference, about 0.32 mm of diameter.

### Why do two ring size charts give different answers?

Because the scales do not line up. A US size is 0.81 mm of diameter and an Indian size is 0.32 mm, so every chart has to round, and different jewellers round differently. The diameter in mm is the figure that never changes.

### Is EU ring size the same as Indian ring size?

They are the same scale 40 apart. EU (ISO) size is the inner circumference in mm; Indian size is that figure minus 40. EU 52 is Indian 12.
